Briza was established in 1990 with the main objective to publish the book Guide to Grasses of South Africa (Afrikaans and English editions). Following the unprecedented success of this somewhat specialized book, Briza had no choice but to open its doors as a commercial publishing house. To compete against larger publishing houses, with a wider range of books, it was of the utmost importance to produce books of an extremely high standard.
With this in mind, Briza has strived to serve a niche market with full-colour, non-fiction books that treat their subject matter in great depth but without sacrificing accessibility and readability. With the emphasis on Botany and Natural History, the Briza list has, over the years built a reputation for its high quality production, practical approach and informative content. As a result, our books appeal to both the layman and the more specialist or academic reader."
Prior to this, Briza has merely sold rights for its titles or done co-editions here in North America, so they are eager to be represented, and grow under their own name.
