The Musical Times is the oldest continuously-published classical
music journal in the world, first appearing in 1844. During the 19th century it
was a specialist outlet for musical journalism, while for many years in the 20th
it was the house magazine of the sheet-music publishers Novello and Co, with a
succession of distinguished editors and a substantial following throughout the
world. In 1995 it passed into the private ownership of Peter Phillips, the
founder of the renaissance choral ensemble the Tallis Scholars. Since then,
under the editorship of Antony Bye, it has established itself as a
leading academic journal in the field of musical criticism. In addition to
publishing the Musical Times quarterly, Peter Phillips has begun to issue books
under the MT imprint.
