DAVID WILLIAMS, Deputy Editor of the Johannesburg Financial Mail and Research Associate at the South African Institute of International Affairs, is an expert on the El Alamein battles and the desert campaigns. An experienced radio and TV broadcaster, he covered military affairs for the Financial Mail, notably during South Africa’s transition in 1990–1995. He has published books on sport, Great Games (Penguin, 1998) and Toughest of Them All with Grant Harding (Penguin, 2001) and on history, Seven Battles that Shaped South Africa (Tafelberg, 2005). He was educated at King Edward VII School and at the University of Witwatersrand.
